BHOF Submits Comments on CMS Proposed CJR-X Payment Model

The Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF) submitted comments to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) regarding the proposed expansion of the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR-X) model. BHOF expressed concern that the proposal overlooks osteoporosis despite evidence that more than half of patients undergoing hip replacement have underlying osteoporosis or low bone mass.

BHOF urges CMS to incorporate osteoporosis screening, diagnosis, and evidence-based post-fracture care into the model to improve patient outcomes and reduce long-term Medicare costs. BHOF also recommends referrals to Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), separate reimbursement for osteoporosis-related care, and adoption of new Medicare payment codes that support coordinated post-fracture management. These changes would help ensure that beneficiaries receive appropriate bone health evaluation and treatment while reducing the risk of future fractures.
