Improving Medicare Coverage for Osteoporosis and Post-Fracture Care

The Bone Health and Osteoporosis Foundation (BHOF), alongside 19 national patient advocacy and professional organizations, submitted comments to CMS on the CY 2027 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule. The coalition supports proposed measures to strengthen osteoporosis screening and management but urges CMS to go further by establishing new reimbursement codes for coordinated post-fracture care. Current Medicare payment policies do not adequately support Fracture Liaison Services (FLS), an evidence-based approach shown to reduce repeat fractures. The recommendations aim to close persistent gaps in osteoporosis care, improve access to secondary fracture prevention and reduce preventable Medicare costs.
